Mapxus and the Department of Transportation, Taipei City Government Unveil Joint Research to Pioneer Accessible Indoor Navigation

At Mapxus, we’re focused on solving one of modern navigation’s biggest challenges: the gap between outdoor and indoor spaces. Recently, we had the honor of presenting our solution at the 33rd Cross-Strait Urban Transportation Academic Symposium, where we collaborated with the Department of Transportation, Taipei City Government to showcase our joint research on building more accessible cities.

Our Innovation: A Hardware-Free Approach

Traditional indoor positioning has often relied on expensive hardware. Our solution is different. We use a cost-effective, software-based approach that leverages a venue's existing Wi-Fi network.

  • Hardware-Free Technology: We use Wi-Fi fingerprinting , combined with AI algorithms and sensor fusion, to enable indoor positioning without needing to install any new hardware.
  • Seamless Integration: By building on Apple’s Indoor Mapping Data Format (IMDF), our maps are compatible and easily integrated across different platforms.

Proven Results in Our Taipei Proof of Concept (PoC)

In our Proof of Concept (PoC) with the Taipei City Government, we tested this technology in some of the city's most complex public spaces.

  • Complex Venues Mapped: We successfully digitized areas within Taipei Metro's Taipei Main Station and Taipei Zoo Station, along with portions of the Taipei Zoo.
  • Key Accessibility Features Added: Our on-site surveys precisely marked the locations of elevators, ramps, accessible restrooms, and safety equipment like AEDs.
  • Positive User Feedback: We invited users with various accessibility needs to test the app. Participants reported it saved them significant time finding a suitable route and gave the experience high marks.

This collaboration serves as a blueprint for the future, proving that scalable technology can solve real-world problems. The potential extends far beyond transit hubs to hospitals, shopping malls, and airports, creating a more inclusive and accessible world for all.
